4:47 pm - "I only have one thumb!" is a lame battle cry.
Unfortunately, that's been it for the last week and a half. I managed to slice a goodly chunk of my thumb while cutting a loaf of bread during the Amber game, and have been disabled with the lack of one opposable digit since. It's getting better, but it's still pretty sore. And ugly. But in a delightful turn of events, the Lightfeet showed up last night and gave me their bread cutting board, which has a handy thumb-sparing design.

In school news, I'm nearly done with my classes. I go Monday through Wednesday this week and next, then I'll be finished with the lecture/text/exam stuff. I'm still waiting for clinical rotation dates to be provided. As the possible dates stand, I have a 25% chance of having to be in clinical on March 13th and 14th, which would kill ACUS for me.

I woke up this morning after a very vivid dream, one that was so real that I wasn't immediately certain if it was a dream or something that had happened the night before. Then I woke up a bit more and realized, "No, [info]tlatoani isn't in Seattle." And after I got coffee into me, I further realized that he probably doesn't wear that sort of costume to fight crime, either.

I just finished a zombie novel that got me all fired up to write my own. I'm really fond of the zombie genre, but I've never found a *good* zombie novel. Entertaining, yes. Actually good, no. Anyone have recommendations?

The icon doesn't have much to do with the post, just showing it off since [info]cochese was kind enough to make it for me.

8:56 am - And a very happy Solstice to you.
Yesterday was interesting. I got up early for an 8am shift in West Seattle that turned out to be for *next* Thursday. The drive was gorgeous, looking over the Puget Sound and the snowy Olympics beyond it. I came home and finished "Memories of Ice," which as promised made me cry. (And as promised, [info]carpe_noir's hide is forfeit for getting me hooked on the damned series.) For some reason, the library doesn't have the next book. They are on my shit list.

In the late afternoon, I went to work (appropriately, this time) and was told by the client that she wanted to run errands, and that she would drive. Okay, I thought...until I buckled up in her car and remembered, "Oh crap, she has Parkinson's...." Muscle and joint rigidity do not make for good driving. (Or constant tailgating, speeding, hard braking, and driving at night without headlights.) I was in a state of terror for nearly two hours. All I could do was close my eyes and try to relax, as it makes for fewer injuries when you crash if you're not tensed, and dying in a state of fear makes for a crappy reincarnation.

[info]cochese and I are going to meet with our tattoo artist tonight -- what better celebration of Solstice than to plan for blood and pain and art?

3:27 pm - Awww yeah.
Today's exam was the state boards practice test. I'll have to pass it in its entirety next quarter in order to graduate, and then take the real thing to get licensure. My scores today (in comparison with all LPN students nationally):

Medical-Surgical: 98th percentile

Pharmacology: 100th percentile

W00t!

7:52 am - Finals week begins.
I have my first final exam today. It's for my nursing skills class, which is all about how to do stuff like insert a catheter or take out surgical staples (so much fun!).

Tomorrow's testing doesn't count toward my grade; it's a practice test to see how well I'd do if I took the state boards right now.

Monday is the pharmacology final; Tuesday is medical-surgical, which is all nursing theory and disease process information. Yep, the big ones are saved for last.

In anticipation of having three weeks off from school, I requested a bunch of books from the library. The first one arrived yesterday: Steven Erikson's "Memories of Ice," the third in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. I can't wait to get into it. But if it makes me cry like book two, it's coming out of your hide, [info]carpe_noir.

4:34 pm - Idle musings from an idle day.
I read issue #8 of "Batman and Robin: The Boy Wonder" today. When did the Joker get tattooed up like Crying Freeman, and is it wrong to find him hot?

Our new next-door neighbor knocked on the door this afternoon to ask to borrow my keys. He'd locked his inside the laundry room. Bashful is very cute on scruffy tough guys.

Started reading Stephen Batchelor's "Living with the Devil: A Meditation on Good and Evil" on Monday night. He investigates the Buddhist perspective with the view of someone who was raised with Judeo-Christian concepts of good and evil. Good stuff. I also loaded up my library request list in anticipation of having three weeks off from school.

Six more days of school left: one term paper, one presentation, two tests and four finals. Of course, when I have today off, the school website is down and I can't access the online research materials that I need.

Thanks to all those who had input on my dishwasher woes. All is well again.

9:39 pm - Your opinion, please.
Tonight [info]cochese said, "You can tell a lot about a man by the type of woman he attracts -- or the type of woman he puts up with."

This was in reference to someone else, but it made me wonder: for those of you who know both of us, what does it say about [info]cochese?

10:15 pm - Across the Universe
After a lovely lunch at Cedars with some of the usual suspects, [info]cochese and I went to see "Across the Universe." While a little light on plot, it was beautiful to look at and the Beatles music was great. A few observations:

Joe Cocker as a pimp. Hee!

The older Bono gets, the more he looks like Robin Williams.

Eddie Izzard is so excellent, I'd pay to have him read the phone book.

Salma Hayek makes a brief appearance in an astonishingly sexy nurse outfit. [info]cochese says I must procure said outfit.

Between this movie, which has a large cast of mostly real-looking people (instead of the inhumanly pretty Hollywood types) and watching the first episode of the U.K. show "Ultraviolet," I'm once again disgusted by the "perfection" that has to be rammed down our throats with every American TV show or movie. No one's going to die of shock if they see a crooked tooth, a skin blemish, or an abdomen minus the six-pack. To paraphrase Neil Gaiman, who was recently commenting on a photo-retouching website, it's the flaws that make for interesting faces. They're human and vulnerable and loveable.

I found two actual, honest-to-god gray hairs today. Not those white-blond, blends-in-with-the-rest sort, but the crazy steel-gray ones that stand straight up and wave HI!

1:43 pm - I've taken control of the blog!
This is [info]cochese. We went to Kinkos to get the art by [info]vaultedthewall scanned in. I was tasked with uploading it to the internets and making a userpic of it as well. And then posting on her blog about it. The pic is behind the cut. It is, essentially, [info]nakedvillainy drawn as though she was Belldandy from Ah! My Goddess! Because she's always been my magical girlfriend. You can click on the image to get a larger view.

So there ya go.

7:47 pm - Oops.
[info]cochese and I took a walk around the neighborhood this evening. We were approaching an intersection as I was animatedly describing a dream I'd had during the nap I'd taken earlier that afternoon. As we nearly reached the corner, I was saying, "So there was nothing left but this erect dick and a dried-up husk of a dead body..." and we came face to face with a couple walking with their toddler.

Oops.

10:20 am - Small annoyances.
I ordered a t-shirt online, and although it fits fine, it's about five inches too long. Sigh. The average American woman is 5'2", people. I realize that many of you would delight in seeing this rack on a six-foot-tall Amazon, but my people are built close to the ground for extra fierceness.

My printer just ran out of ink halfway though printing out my homework.

Only one dryer in our building works appropriately. The other two shut off after 30 minutes of drying. Thus it is taking me all day to do laundry.

I've been using the Seventh Generation dishwasher detergent, and I'm not sure if our dishwasher is dying, or if it's the soap. All the glass is starting to look cloudy, and coffee mugs seem to be perpetually coffee-colored.

32, actually, but who's counting?

Kneel, my subjects! All hail the birthday princess!

(I received my birthday present from [info]cochese last night. He had commissioned a piece of art for me, which is a gorgeous rendition of me as Belldandy from "Ah! My Goddess!" I'll see if I can get the artist's permission to get it scanned in to show.)

5:11 pm - Who knew a con with plague could be so excellent?
An astonishingly excellent con, I must say. Despite the plague and the necessity of leaving Sunday night, I had an incredible time.

The porn game went well, encouraging [info]nuadha_prime and me to run another one next time. Rather than fairies, it will be a totalitarian regime-style S&M game. Because who has better fetish gear than tyrants?

Friday I played all day, and each game was terrific. Thanks to [info]ogremarco for running "Johann's Panzer" and being kind to my dice/WWII-clueless self. Special thanks to [info]tlatoni for the back rub while we made our way across Germany to surrender to the French (who knew?).

I also played in [info]nuadha_prime's "Dreaming Cities" game, which is always fun. I also reprised my character from last year in Mike S.'s "Separate People" and got killed at the end of the game. Well, it was heroic.

On Saturday I ran "Chonoguard!" which I believe went well. I'm still undecided if I'll run a sequel. Saturday night the plague began to take its toll, damaging "When Darkness Falls" and entirely obliterating my Sunday morning game of "Infernal Desires." However, I got to join Eric T.'s game, where I delighted in the role of Fiona partnered to [info]carpe_noir's Bleys.

I got a total of three hours sleep on Monday morning before stumbling off to the hospital. Luckily, it wasn't too difficult a day. Today was a different story, but that's a post for the nursing lj. Hope everyone is recovering well, home safe, and looking forward to next year as I am.

11:01 am - And much gaming was had by all.
By "all," I mean [info]cochese, [info]ogremarco, [info]vaultedthewall, [info]moonspiralz, William R., and myself. Many thanks to William for bringing the beer!

We started the morning with my playtest of "Chronoguard!" which was immensely helpful to my continued work on the game. Overall it went well and the players enjoyed themselves. It left me with concrete ideas to flesh out and the realization that I really can't plan all that much when time travel is available to players.

Next, we playtested "Grindhouse," in which [info]moonspiralz ran a haunted house game using some iteration of the Inspectres rules/dice, and [info]cochese ran a zombie game using PTA. Overall, I found the player narration in the former easier to handle, but describing action in cinematic narration for the latter was fun, too. This was my first foray into indie gaming, and I enjoyed it very much.

Today I'll be working on my emails to players. Slot five is assured of a game now. Slots one and seven might still get the rubber sheet.
